Sofia Waara comes from Pajala area, Sweden, and is an artist, art teacher and mother. She has studied to become a teacher of fine arts and design at Konstfack, College of Arts Crafts and Design, Sweden. In her Master´s degree studies at the University of Lapland deepened her knowledge in northern cultures and the arctic environments, specializing in community art in lapland.

Katri Konttinen has graduated as Industrial Designer from the Kuopio Academy of Design, Savonia University of Applied Sciences. In her Master´s degree studies she focused on observing applied visual art as a combining factor between art and design. She deepened her knowledge in Environmental Art and Community Art. In the project she is the other grounding member together with Sofia Waara.

At the moment, both Waara and Konttinen are finishing their studies in the master´s degree program of Applied Visual Arts at the University of Lapland. Sharing the interest in nature and inspired by the great northern rivers in Lapland, they found the first ideas of RiverSounds, which came to developed into a holistic concept. This process took place during the years of study (2011-2012).
